2011 Klondike Derby
On Saturday, February 12, the new Dan Beard District formed from a merger of the Iron Horse and old Dan Beard District in
January 2011 held a Klondike Derby at Goose Pond Scout Reservation.
Our troop's three teams (Good Burgers Patrol, Five Amigos Patrol, and Five Below Patrol) competed with 42 other teams in fire building, scout
history, first aid, knot tying, nature, orienteering, and other scout skills. During the morning the weather was pretty clear, but in the
afternoon we were treated to snow flurries that grew to temporary whiteout conditions on the Pond. The troop also hosted Webelos Scouts
Matthew and Hunter. Steve, Dominick, Nick, Ian, Julian, Bruce, Tommy, Karl, Tyler, Andrew, Adam, Tim, Gino, Rico, and Joey were participating
scouts, and Griff Lewis, Len Kalinowski, Bob Buchinski, Joe Faltynowicz, Rico Galassi, Frank Klassner, John Maza, Kathy Lewis, Joe Piela, George Penn, and
Drew Yurkanin were participating troop leaders, many of whom worked at the fire-building station. At the station, patrols had to build a
leave-no-trace fire and melt an ice cube. The whole troop celebrated when we heard the Five Amigos Patrol came in first place in the senior
division and was the overall winner as well! Congratulations, guys! They also received an impromptu award for best team costume design with
their sombreros.
