1942 World War II Aluminum Drive
During World War II, Troop 21 took active part in aluminum drives and
waste paper drives for defense. We believe this picture was taken in the
summer of 1942, when the Boy Scouts of America organized a nationwide aluminum drive as a National Good Turn to help the US war effort.
Later, in 1943-44 the Mid Valley Council collected 220 tons of waste paper as part of the "General Eisenhower Campaign."
The "Eisenhower Medal" was awarded to each boy who collected
1000 pounds of paper. Three hundred and fifty Scouts in the council, including several from Troop 21,
received Eisenhower medals recognizing their work. The group of small boys to the right who are wearing
neckerchiefs without uniforms are Cub Scouts. This picture shows
boys from Troop 24 (another Troop sponsored by St. Mary's for Polish-speaking boys) in addition to Troop 21.
Both troops wore deep green neckerchiefs, but Troop 24's boys wore neckerchiefs with yellow-orange edges,
while Troop 21's boys wore neckerchiefs with dark red edges.
